# Install and use NeuroCards offline

NeuroCards can be installed as a progressive web app, so it opens in its own window or from your home screen. It can also keep previously loaded study data on the current device and queue review ratings when the connection drops.

Installation and offline availability are related but separate: installing the app does not automatically save every deck. Open the material you need while online first.

## Install on a computer

On Chrome, Edge, and other supported Chromium browsers:

1. Open NeuroCards in the browser.
2. Open **Settings** from the account menu.
3. Find **Install NeuroCards** and select **Install**.
4. Accept the browser's installation prompt.

The install button appears only when the browser reports that NeuroCards is ready to install. If it is missing, check the browser's address-bar or application menu for its install action, and make sure you have not already installed the app.

## Add to an iPhone or iPad

1. **Open NeuroCards in Safari**

Installation from the home screen uses Safari's share controls.
2. **Open the instructions**

In NeuroCards, open **Settings** and expand **Add NeuroCards to Home Screen**.
3. **Choose Add to Home Screen**

Tap **Share**, then **Add to Home Screen**. If **Share** is hidden, open **More** first.
4. **Confirm the installation**

Leave **Open as Web App** enabled if Safari shows the option, then tap **Add**.

Launch NeuroCards from the new home-screen icon to use the installed version.

## Prepare for offline study

Before leaving a reliable connection:

1. Sign in on the device and browser you plan to use.
2. Open **Library** and the decks or folders you expect to study.
3. Start or open the relevant study view so its latest data can be saved locally.
4. Check that the sync status reports **Synced** before going offline.

Saved offline data belongs to that browser on that device. Another phone, a private browsing window, or a cleared browser profile will not share the same local copy.

## Understand sync status

The status chip in the study interface shows what is happening to your reviews:

| Status | Meaning | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Offline or Unreachable | The server cannot currently be reached | Continue studying saved cards, then reconnect later |
| Not saved | One or more ratings are waiting or a retry has stalled | Reconnect and expand the status for **Retry now** |
| Syncing | NeuroCards is sending pending work | Keep the app open until it finishes |
| Synced | The current device has no pending review updates | It is safe to close the session |

If the server refuses a queued update rather than temporarily failing, NeuroCards marks that update as discarded instead of retrying it forever. Expand the status for the available detail.

> **Caution**
>
> Wait for **Synced** before signing out, clearing browser data, or removing the app. Pending reviews and saved offline data can be lost when the local browser storage is cleared.

## What still needs a connection

Offline support is designed for reviewing material that the device has already loaded. Creating or reorganising library items, importing cards, and generating cards with AI require the server. Complete those tasks after reconnecting.

If expected cards are unavailable offline, reconnect, open the relevant deck and study view again, and wait for **Synced**. Then test the installed app without a connection before depending on it for a trip or exam session.
